When I was little I had this big book of polish fairytales, my mom used to read them to me often, but there was one story which I particularly adored. It was about poverty personified as a demon, monster thing, and it would bring misery to the family or person it was with at the time. There were two neighbours, one was very wealthy and the other very poor. The poor neighbour and his wife were constantly harassed by the demon, which literally ate them out of house and home. One day, he got fed up and led the monster out into the woods near a hollow tree and tricked it into going inside, where he quickly boarded up the opening so it couldn't escape. He headed back to town happily, but the rich neighbour spotted him and thought he had hidden some treasure. So, ultimately, the wealthy man got stuck with the monster and became poor, all because of his greed.
I can't remember any specific details, but that's roughly how the story went.
